Usage:

\renewcommand{\the<counter>}{\greek{<counter>}}
\renewcommand{\the<counter>}{\Greek{<counter>}}

e.g. \renewcommand{\theenumi}{\greek{enumi}}

Provides \greek and \Greek for counters just like \alph. No switch to 
math mode is needed. \varepsilon, \vartheta and \varphi are preferred, 
but \pi and \sigma.
